"ImmoralMinority" (araimondo)

My wife’s family lives in the Bay Area, and they are classic Bay Area liberals who take strong stands on social and economic issues that will never touch them.
Last night, her younger sister sent my video of her with the kids at a protest in support of Oakland’s public school teachers’ strike. The kids were adorable, chanting “Oakland is a union town!” Aww.....
Of course, these kids attend expensive, non-union, private schools. Mom works as an executive in a SF high rose, and dad owns his own business. Workers of the world, unite!
I started chanting “Oakland is a union town! But not for our kids! Oakland is a union town! Send your kids to private schools!”
The air is a little chilly in here this morning.

I live in a deeply red state, but the pockets of leftism can be very strong and come in two flavors:
1. Working-class African Americans (and some whites) who truly support and benefit from socialistic policies. I call this “earned liberalism” and it’s worthy to have a place in the discussion, even if a lot falls on deaf ears.
2. Ultra-wealthy white people who take up the causes for #1 despite never having experienced any of it at all. I call this “purchased liberalism.” It should mostly be ignored. I’m not saying we peel the Bernie stickers off of their brand new XC90s, but maybe.

You do realize that you can fight for the rights of others, right? That you don’t need to be personally affected to want to help those who are?
Besides, improvements to a school can improve a whole community, which does affect everyone who lives there and in the surrounding areas to some extent .

Classic NIMBYs.
They’re the same type that won’t drive through the shithole section of town without an armored car and a roof-mounted gatling gun.
They’d be the first to put their house up for sale if a black family moved in next door.
They think Mad Mex is the best place to get real Mexican food.

Her
family
may
be
a
group
of
elitists,
but
the
education
system
affects
the
entire
community,
and
they’re
helping
to
pay
for
it,
so
they
certainly
have
a
right
to
weigh
in
on
it.
Bragging about it may be a bit over the top, given that they attend private schools.

I am strongly against kids under 13 participating in political/social causes with their parents. If you’re an adult and you need to bring your kid? Okay. If they ask to make a sign? I guess. But don’t encourage them to think like you; show them the alternative side; and don’t give them extra attention only when they say things that agree with you. When I lived in Eugene I hated how much people encouraged their kids to take a stand(the same as their own) on causes. I think it’s good for kids to have a voice on social issues; I think it’s bad when it’s an uninformed contorted view from their parents.

So what you’re saying is...
regardless of political affiliation.

TBH I don’ t have a problem with their stance. You can pay taxes to the local government and still want a better education for your kids. Better that then be rich and try to hoard your money.
I live in Detroit and pay all of my taxes, want to stay here too. B ut if I had kids there would be a lot to debate.

What is wrong with wanting better things for people less fortunate then yourself? I’m cool with camp #2.

I support your wife’s family. I think they’re doing good.
It’s better to do what they’re doing as opposed to being rich elitests while funding lobbyists to pass laws to destroy public unions and defang private unions (Wisconsin and others).
Because I have some money and I don’t live in the poor parts of town and buy expensive elitest cars (let’s assume) doesn’t mean that I don’t have empathy for people in worse situations than me.

I don’t have a problem with 2.
Since
poor working class whites have no experience with having millions of dollars, they should
not be allowed to
people who pass
tax cuts
predominately benefit
ing
the
ultra rich and the megacorporations?

Oh for fuck’s sake! I’m liberal and I this is why I can’t fucking stand liberals. They all have their heads wedged firmly up their own ass and have zero common sense. They’re too busy bitching and whining about shit to get things done or actually see how the world works.
Can we get rid of San Francisco?
